Bumps pose health risks, say doctors
Speedbreakers in the state have failed to fulfill their requirements.
CHENNAI: Though laid to prevent accidents, speedbreakers in the state have failed to fulfill their requirements, causing more accidents and health problems as against their purpose. “The intervertebral disc works as a shock absorber. When on a bike or a car, there is no sensation on the legs and when the rider jumps on potholes or speedbreakers, the pressure generated is much higher which can lead to dysfunction of the disc,” said Appaji Krishnan K, consultant spine surgeon, SIMS Hospital. Women, on the other hand, have other problems to deal with as well.
“A menstruating woman would have the fear of spills which could cause extreme embarrassment as she would not be prepared with an extra set of clothes. In the case of a pregnant woman, it could prove highly dangerous as it could take the life of the mother and the child,” said Yashodhara Pradeep, chairperson, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI).
“Speedbreakers are essential, but they should be laid right. No standard norms are being followed in our country to ensure the structures are not too high and therefore they can prove extremely dangerous to the public, especially pregnant women. It could cause the uterus to rupture,” the doctor said. With no signboards or warnings to riders, more often than not, bike riders get up from their seats and let the bike jump over the speed breaker before continuing their ride. “Such stunts could affect the spine. Too many speed breakers are also not good,” said Krishnan adding, “Anyone who already has a back problem will have an exaggerated pain.”
