Washing down a sweet treat with water causes your blood sugar levels to rise, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

A new study conducted by researchers from Suriname in South America analysed participants blood sugar levels after who consumed jam doughnuts with or without water.

They found those that drank water with it had higher sugar levels than those who ate the same amount of doughnuts without water.

High levels can increase risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Researchers reveal the body absorbs glucose with the help of water.

Daily Mail quoted the authors as saying:  "A quick search on the internet reveals that the abundance of sites encourage the drinking of water during or shortly after our meals.

"Rather than being good practice, this is more of a cultural habit.

"We suggest that drinking during and shortly after meals should ideally be kept to the minimum."

The study was originally published in the journal Clinical Nutrition ESPEN.
