Researchers say soya-based bacon fattier than traditional meat
Healthy alternative products could end up doing more harm than good.
It may be trendy to swap regular meat for soya-based bacon and sausages all in the name of health.
However, researchers have found these healthy alternatives are actually fattier and more calorific than traditional meat options, the Daily Mail reported.
Vegetarian smoky bacon made from soya found in Sainsbury, a UK supermarket chain, contains 309 calories per 100g, while unsmoked back bacon contains just 233 calories per 100g, according to a report by the Sunday Times. This is just one of the many exampled of “healthy” alternatives being less healthy than a regular product of the same.
Research has found that many people are switching to these products because they are not pleased with intensive farming methods, animal living conditions and slaughter, the Daily Mail reported.
"Veganism and vegetarianism can be a very positive thing, but it’s not necessarily a free pass to great health," Nutritionist Amanda Ursell told the Sunday Times.
Adding, "Any processed food can be high in fat, salt and sugar. It is always a case of buyer beware when buying processed foods and reading the labels."
Checking the labels and educating yourself about the products is essential as you may do more harm than good to your health.
