15 million couples face infertility issues: Expert

Chennai: “Infertility is a concern not only for couples above the age of 35 years, but in the age group of 21 to 30 years. Around 27 percent of couples in the country are in the age group of 21 to 25 years and 15 percent of them facing infertility issues,” said Dr Shivani Gour, a gynaecologist and infertility expert and general secretary for the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction, Delhi at an international conference organised by Indian Society for Third Party Association and Reproduction.

The conference aimed at discussing recent advances and technologies in artificial reproduction technologies, surrogacy bill and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). An extensive workshop was held for young girls to sensitise on PCOS and its effects. Experts also emphasised on the role of micronutrients in infertility.

“Correction of micronutrient deficiency can help to reduce the burden of infertility in men and can also reduce the infertility rates in women, especially with polycystic ovarian disease,” Dr Himanshu Bavishi, President, INSTAR said. 

He added that infertility is common in almost 15 million couples in India. Hence, India needs to have an ethical treatment available to the society by gynaecologists all over the country.
