Hyderabad: Inflammation, infections, diabetes, abnormal hormones and watching porn are stated to be the main reasons for premature ejaculation in men. Andrologists and sexologists state that they were earlier seeing only two patients with this problem every month but now there are seeing 15 to 20 patients in a month in a single clinic.

The rise in these numbers is due to the lifestyle changes leading to early advent of diseases and also the increasing incidence of diabetes in the younger age group. Dr Venkata Ramana, retired professor of andrology at the Osmania Medical College explained, “In the younger age group the excitement and anxiety created by watching porn is the reason for premature ejaculation. It begins at an early age when they first get addicted to porn. In the same age group, when there is an early advent of diseases, infections and also inflammation, the condition aggravates further. The numbers are seeing a rise now and many more of them are coming to the centres for treatment as it is affecting their sex life. For this reason, they are opening up and seeking treatment.”

Earlier, the sexologists in the city saw more middle-aged and elderly men who came with problems but in the last two years there has been a change with more and more young men walking in with their problems.

Dr Rahul Reddy, senior andrologist and founder of Men’s Health Institute in Hyderabad explained, “We find young men who come to us stating that their female partners are not satisfied. This also shows how women are opening up about their desires and need for satisfaction. For this reason too, men come up with their problems of premature ejaculation to us as for them it becomes a problem of not-a-good-enough performance. This complaint has a major impact on their psychology as it creates further anxiety.”

Both sexes indulge in videos of sexual acts and there is a virtual image of the satisfied feeling which may not necessarily translate into reality. This is proving to be a bigger barrier as what is fantasised may not become real. It also differs from person to person and hence there can’t be a standard set of emotions for all, says a senior sexologist.

Pills are now available for ‘delayed’ ejaculation for those who have a severe problem. Dr V. Krishna, senior andrologist with a fertility centre explained, “In 5 out of 10 cases that we see, we find that men are not aware of their underlying medical status. Their diabetic and infectious conditions have not been diagnosed. Once the problem is tackled with medication then the sexual issues are also simplified. Stress and abnormal hormones like prolactin, luteinising and thyroid stimulating hormone are also associated with premature ejaculation.”
