Kozhikode: Mananchira Square will soon be equipped with a Community Health Park aimed at improving the fitness of city dwellers. The project is being implemented by the District Sports Council in co-operation with the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation.

The project, which costs over Rs 50 lakh, is funded and logistically supported by the directorate of sports and youth affairs. Recently, the director of the department had visited the City and expressed satisfaction with the space provided by the Corporation for the project. The project was sanctioned based on a proposal submitted by the Sports Council.

A well equipped gymnasium will also be set up in the City using the machines imported during the National Games hosted by the state in 2015. The gymnasium will come up at the Grand Stand Pavilion of the Kozhikode Corporation’s EMS Stadium.

Speaking to DC, Sports Council President K.J Mathai said that the Heath Park would come up by April-end. “This is a proposal by the Kozhikode District Sports Council and ours will be the first district to get such a health park in the state,” he said.

He added that the Gymnasium coming up at the Corporation Stadium would also start functioning soon after fixing facilities like air-conditioners.  “We will have to charge a minimal amount for the maintenance, electricity and allowances for the caretakers from the users,” he added. The Corporation council meeting recently approved the proposal to establish the community Health Park and gymnasium.
