Gajapooja on Elephant Day

Six elephants, including three calves, were given a feast of boiled rice mixed with jaggery.

Wayanad: The elephant camp of forest department in Muthanga range of Wayanad wildlife sanctuary organised a Gajapooja (elephant salutation) to mark the World Elephant Day on Tuesday. Six elephants, including three calves, were given a feast of boiled rice mixed with jaggery. There were many visitors to witness the event.

"This is a regular event on the World Elephant Day," Wayanad Wildlife Warden P. Dhanesh Kumar told DC. "Traditionally, the eldest person of the tribal settlement of mahouts used to lead the rituals of Gajapooja," he added. Noolpuzha panchayat president Mr. Sobhan Kumar inaugurated the programme which was presided over by Mr. Dhanesh Kumar.
