What about a holiday excites a traveller? It’s different strokes for different folks, right? And some places, have it all. Some others can be mono-dimensional. Apart from exploring a new place, tasting the local cuisine, and embracing a new culture, it's the experience itself that captivates the heart for many. And that's where the hospitality industry steps in. Today, most resorts and hotels have realised that guests often associate a destination with the hospitality they receive during their stay. So, many of them go to great lengths when it comes to unrolling the proverbial red carpet. It’s not surprising to see them put in a lot of effort into providing exceptional and memorable experiences, in terms of stay, to their guests.

Recently, I had the chance to visit two incredible resorts in the Maldives—VARU by Atmosphere and Atmosphere Kanifushi—and I must say, the hospitality surpassed all my expectations.

VARU by Atmosphere is a swift 40-minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport in Malé. The luxury resort is a wonderland of white sand beaches, azure waters, and lush landscapes. Guests arrive to a ceremonial welcome with Maldivian Boduberu drums and refreshing tender coconut water.

Upon arrival, Mei P Pun, the General Manager of VARU by Atmosphere, warmly declares, "We want you to do just one thing: RELAX." And relax we did, thanks to the attentive staff who looked into every detail. Over the next couple of days, I witnessed Mei’s hands-on management style and infectious enthusiasm. Not only did she make personalised dining recommendations, but also shared fascinating trivia about marine life and local culture. Mei even insisted on star gazing, which turned out to be a one-of-a-kind experience.

Rooms

The elegantly done up villas also exude a romantic old-world charm. Set amid pristine beaches, they offer a serene escape for guests. My sunset pool villa featured a large bathtub overlooking the sea through a French window, a coffee maker with a selection of premium teas and coffees, and a fully stocked mini bar with fine imported wines, snacks, and fruits, replenished twice daily. Waking up to the sight of turquoise waters and having a plunge pool in the privacy of your room to relax in, elevated the experience. Guests can select from beach villas with or without a pool, while families can opt for the fully furnished Majilis suite, complete with butler service and a private buggy.

Activities

Holidaying on a Maldives Island is all about a relaxed schedule where you could explore the place at your own pace. But mind you, you will still run out of time if you want to see the length and breadth of the property—there are a plethora of activities to keep you busy. From exploring the coral reefs and indulging in water sports to unwinding at the spa or and delightful adventure excursions, there's a lot you can do here.

Pick the snorkeling gear from the dive centre and make your way to the Indian Ocean to explore sea life. Maldives enchants visitors with its picturesque, serene environs. There are innumerable instagram worthy corners within the property itself. Picture perfect sounds like an understatement here, at times. There are electric buggies to give you a tour of the beautiful property. You could even explore the place by yourself on a bicycle.

Food

You could grab a table at one of the many restaurants and bars at the resort, including Lime and Chili, Nu, Bay Rouge, and Charcoal, all offering international cuisine. However, if you want to relish the local cuisine, then a visit to Kaage is a must. Chef Mohamed Niyaz has crafted a menu featuring the most authentic Maldivian fare. If you are lucky, you could even make some yourself wearing the traditional sarong. And their floating breakfast is a must try.

Evenings at Bay Rouge are magical, with tables set up by the beach and live music. Imagine a Cuban violinist playing Telugu chartbuster ‘Butta Bomma’ for the guests! Such efforts by the resort truly make guests feel at home. As the Sun goes down, get ready to be mesmerised by the mashal lighting ceremony, a sight to behold.

The best part about VARU is its all-inclusive pricing. Once you book a room, everything from airport transfers to meals, drinks, star gazing, and snorkeling sessions are covered. VARU by Atmosphere is perfect for those seeking both peace and adventure in the island nation, offering an immersive experience in local culture.

In the Maldivian dialect Dhivehi, ‘VARU’ translates to ‘living life in abundance, strength, resilience, and above all authenticity.’ Embracing the ‘Naturally Maldivian’ ethos, this luxury resort blends local culture and tradition with modern design and top-class service, for a truly authentic Maldivian experience.
