People say mixing business with pleasure is always a bad idea, but the Indian School of Business’ students have found a way to succeed with both!

Their ISB Super League, which started in 2011, has been on since last September, involving the entire ISB community — students, alumni and faculty.

“It’s one of the longest activities that ISB runs. This gives us a completely different perspective,” explains the ISL’s lead coordinator Nrupen Upadhyayula.

Every year, four teams are assigned owners and groups to run them, who follow an IPL-style bidding process (using virtual points) for players. Once the teams are selected, a schedule is laid out from September to March. Abhishek Mulukutla, who owns Team Titans, explains how the League helps.

“Statistical models on optimising teams and who you choose, and how to manage your team’s strengths... it all comes to play here. It’s a typical team owner’s role we play here,” he says.

“And you also learn a lot of soft skills and management there,” agrees Abhyudaya Rana, who owns Team Hurricanes.

Another way ISL helps is marketing strategy, for which teams employ marketing students from the school. “Graduates who study marketing take this as a platform to polish skills as they market teams. There will be activities related to players and matches on Facebook and Twitter, and we also put up posters in the cafeteria and other places, so that the teams are branded across the whole campus,” says Karan Gandhi, one of the Finance and Operations coordinators for the ISL.

The last day of the ISL also includes a duathlon, that will take place on March 20.
