Inspired by tradition
The effervescent works by Thota Laxminarayan have a deep connection with the finer aspects of traditional Nirmal paintings.
“I belong to the Adilabad district known for the beautiful painting style which was practised fervently in earlier days. If through my work I am able to remind the viewers about the vanishing traditional art forms, I would believe that my journey as an artist has been meaningful.” A self-taught artist Laxminarayan recreates the traditional ethos aptly amalgamated with personal connotation in his paintings. He imbibes into his entity a strong rustic charm that naturally gets reflected onto his medium of expression. The present series of works by the artist, titled Desi Tails are on display at Meraki art gallery, Park Hyatt.
The many anecdotes and episodes from his beloved village get exemplified in his work in a joyful, frolicsome fervour. He often blends elements from modern, contemporary times as an integral part of his diction. The inclusion of plenty of geometrical patterns and motifs energises the space and grants it an undercurrent of momentum. The colour palette is warm and full of luminescent hues. There are no sections which go offbeat from the unanimously spread lively rhythm as there are no murky or neutral areas. The complete work reaches out to the viewer at once, as the artist refrains himself from disclosing one section after the other. Each work bares itself instantly with all its effulgent intensity and strength.
While talking about the subtle manifestation of allegory and humour in the works, the artist explains, “I am often fascinated by the number of rural people who migrate to cities. They get bedazzled by the social, cultural and environmental differences they confront. In some of my works, I create the transition period where my protagonist tries to adapt to the modern culture but also retains the rustic essence which proudly is an indispensable aspect of her personality.” The buffaloes completely reign over the picture surface created by the artist, contentedly wagging their tails they traverse with a monarchical air and spirit. “I have grown up with buffaloes around me, my stories about my birth place would never be complete without the mention of these adorable companions,” says the artist.
