Kozhikode: Campaign to revive drama launched
Drama was the best therapist for setting goals, solving problems'.
KOZHIKODE: A group of drama lovers in Kozhikode representing Prekshaka Nadakagurukulam, SRC- Inte-growth institute and Ezhuthu magazine, have launched a ‘Save Drama Campaign’ at Anakulam Samskarika Nilayam to revive the drama, on World Drama Day. Claiming that drama was the best therapist for setting goals, solving problems, expressing feelings or achieving catharsis, the campaigners also launched Drama Therapy.
Inaugurating the campaign, noted Historian MGS Narayanan said, “Drama has always resulted in the great transformation of society, especially the works of the bygone era. When we say that drama can be a good therapy to resolve many issues, it has to be said that it is drama that needs to be cured first now. Drama at first took its form through Kathakali and various other similar arts. Later the advent of new technologies took over, but it can be said with conviction that no other art has brought real transformation in society.”
He pointed out that drama brought about a constant interaction between the audience, the actor and the director, which other arts lack. “Bringing a permanent venue for drama can be the best way to save it. Hence through the campaign we are must try to constantly perform dramas so that it becomes an inevitable part,” he added.
The brain child behind the campaign, Jayasanker Pothuvath said, “This campaign is to rescue drama and revive it in our society. Drama aids self- discovery like nothing else. In removing it from our land, we remove the inestimable benefits of it from our society. Drama and creative arts subjects are being marginalised. We are very worried.” He added, “We will find a permanent venue to perform drama, where all the artists will be given a chance to showcase the art and also conduct classes’ workshops to spread the word of the campaign.”
