All set to make a mark globally
Five dance groups from the country have made it to World Hip Hop Dance Championship, which will be held in the US between August 7 and 12.
Five groups, V Company, X1X Crew, Showstoppers Crew, D Pirates and I Crew, who won Indian Hip Hop Dance Championship, — a brainchild of Anjan Sivakumar from Chennai, have made it to World Hip Hop Dance Championship.
The contest will be conducted in the US this year between August 7 and 12.
Sivakumar says that they have been representing the country since 2012 and have won accreditations including a Bronze medal.
He tells DC that it was their real life story, which was made as the film series ABCD by Remo D’ Souza, starring Prabhudheva. “It is a very prestigious moment to put India at global level, but the dance culture is hardly getting its due recognition,” Anjan feels.
He adds, “World Hip Hop Dance Championship is a very tough competition and each member is trying hard and sweating it out to win the finals and bring laurels to India. It is called the ‘Dance Olympics’ in various countries, as its rules and regulations to follow are all very strong and they expect a strict discipline. About 6,000 dancers from various countries are expected to take part in it.”
Each dancer from my group are struggling to raise funds needed to attend the final competition, but due to their passion and drive they are pulling it off, Anjan reveals. “Some of them like D Pirates from Mumbai, have members who are all less than 18 years of age studying in different schools. They do not even know as to whom to approach. We are not getting enough support from the government in terms of funds,” he says, and adds, “Our humble request is that Hip Hop dance competition should not only be viewed as a mere entertainment, but also it should be included in the sports categories. After all, we are striving hard to make India proud.”
