Hyderabad: A 12-year-old boy tried to save his father from the clutches of a crocodile and ended in tragedy in Sunderbans on Sunday. The incident occurred at Satyadaspur village in Patharpratima, South 24-Parganas, close to the banks of the Jagaddal River.
In spite of the desperate efforts of Rabiul Sheikh, to free his father, the crocodile dragged Asmauddin Shiekh into the river. Later, his body was found on Monday morning.
The sixth-class student tried to use his hands to force open the crocodile's jaws and free his father's right arm, but Asmauddin told him to summon the locals for assistance instead.
After running to the riverbank, the child came back a short while later with a few others, but by then, Asmauddin and the crocodile had vanished.
On Sunday afternoon, Asmauddin had gone fishing with Rabiul in the Jagaddal river. He was about to pull the fishing net from knee-deep water when a 10-foot saltwater crocodile attacked him.
Initially, Rabiul was shocked and quickly took action. He said, "I jumped over the animal and tried to open its mouth but it was too strong for me. I felt helpless and started crying. My father then advised me to call villagers to rescue him. I returned within a few minutes with some people, but by then the crocodile had taken my father away."
When locals called the Gobardhanpur coastal police, they started a search operation with the help of forest officials. The official in charge of the Gobardhanpur coastal police, Chandan Pandit, praised Rabiul for his bravery. “The boy showed exemplary bravery to save his father. We rushed to the spot and began the rescue operation. Unfortunately, we found the man’s body on Monday morning. An autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday.”
