18th Lok Sabha Sessions

The inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha is slated to commence on June 24, focusing on the swearing-in of newly elected members and the election of the Speaker. Over the course of ten days, from June 24 to July 3, the session will set the stage for parliamentary proceedings, including the President's address on June 27, expected to outline the government's agenda for the upcoming five years.

The process of electing the Speaker involves several steps. Initially, members submit their nominations, which must be seconded by other members. These nominations are scrutinized to ensure they meet the required criteria. On the day of the election, the House votes on the nominations. If there is more than one candidate, a secret ballot is conducted. The candidate who secures the majority of votes is declared the Speaker. If only one candidate is nominated, they are elected unopposed.
Once elected, the Speaker assumes office, marking a significant moment in the parliamentary process. Following the election of the Speaker, the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) participate in a solemn oath-taking ceremony. Each MP comes forward individually to take their oath or affirmation, pledging to uphold the Constitution and serve the nation faithfully. This ceremony not only signifies their formal induction into the Lok Sabha but also underscores their commitment to their legislative duties and responsibilities.
The first session of the Lok Sabha is thus focused on establishing the internal structure necessary for its functioning. By electing the Speaker and swearing in the MPs, the session lays the foundation for a productive and representative legislature. These initial steps are crucial, as they pave the way for subsequent sessions where the core activities of the House—debates, discussions, and the passing of laws—can take place.
In essence, the inaugural session of the Lok Sabha is dedicated to setting up the procedural framework and ensuring that the House is well-prepared to undertake its legislative mandate effectively. This preparatory phase is vital for the smooth operation of parliamentary democracy in India.
