A portion of the ill-fated Vivekananda Setu which has been under construction since 2009 came crashing down at around 12.35 pm.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in Midnapore for election campaign, rushed to the accident spot to review the situation, cutting short her visit.
Reports said that the flyover has been under construction since 2009 and missed several deadlines for completion.
Many passenger vehicles, trucks and rickshaws were seen under the debris but it was not immediately known as to how many people were trapped.
Police, fire brigade and disaster management personnel have rushed to the accident site and rescue operations are underway to save those trapped in the debris.
At least 14 people were killed and several injured on Thursday, after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Burrabazar, a bustling crowded market area in north Kolkata.
