AP: Women's Commission seeks report on girl students' safety

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission chairperson Gajjala Venkatalakshmi directed the universities, colleges and schools in the state to furnish details regarding the steps taken to ensure the safety of girl students in their respective institutions. This directive comes in the wake of the recent suicide of Rupashree, a student at Sri Chaitanya Engineering College in Kommadi, Visakhapatnam.
Venkatalakshmi, who visited the college earlier this month to investigate the case, had found lapses in students’ safety measures. The college reportedly lacked instalment of CCTV cameras, a functional women's protection cell, an anti-ragging committee, internal complaints committees (ICCs) and even a complaint box.
In a letter addressed to the Principal Secretaries of Higher Education and School Education departments, the technical education director and the registrars of all universities in Andhra Pradesh, Venkatalakshmi, has sought information on anti-ragging initiatives, the status of women's protection cells and other measures undertaken to prevent sexual harassment of students.
