Chikkodi: Food poisoning at fair leaves 47 sick

Belagavi: Forty-seven individuals including 11 children were hospitalized due to food poisoning after consuming food at a religious event in Kerur village of Chikkodi taluk.

The event- Balumama Jatra Mahotsava, held on Wednesday afternoon, saw a large turnout. Many had consumed the food at the event. The excess food was eaten by local residents later that night, leading to various health issues.

According to officials, nobody who consumed food in the afternoon had any health issues.

By Thursday morning, residents who had food in the night developed health issues and sought medical help. Officials confirmed it to be a case of food poisoning.

It is suspected that the food prepared in the morning had become stale by the evening, causing the food poisoning incidents.

All cases were minor, and there were no serious health problems reported.

According to sources as many as 31 people were admitted to Chikkodi Taluk Hospital, 8 to Examba Community Health Center, and the rest 8 to local Primary Health Centers (PHCs). All are out of danger.

Senior health department officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure all patients receive the necessary care.

Anganwadi workers who visited every house have convinced the people about the precautionary measures. Officials have been directed to chlorinate the water sources in the village.
