Chennai: Man arrested with 3.8 kg gold bars at airport

They found 39 gold bars concealed in a pouch -- 37 of them weighing 100 gm each and two bars weighing 50 gm each.

Chennai: Customs officials at the international airport here have seized 3.8 kg of gold bars with a value of Rs 1.16 crore which was concealed in a plastic pouch containing dates.

Officials said the gold bars were recovered from Rafi Syed, 43, who arrived here from Jeddah in South Arabia on Monday morning.

They also said the gold bars are worth Rs 1.16 crore. The passenger, who holds an Indian passport, was intercepted at the exit point of the arrival hall.

 They found 39 gold bars concealed in a pouch -- 37 of them weighing 100 gm each and two bars weighing 50gm each. He was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act.
