Mumbai: Husnain Warerkar who allegedly killed 14 members of his family and committed suicide on Sunday in Thane, had sent a message on WhatsApp to his brother-in-law saying he has a ‘surprise’ for him, a day before he executed the gruesome murders.

According to reports, Shaukat Khan, who was married to Husnain’s sister Sabina, told police that he received the message on Saturday but had no reason to doubt what it meant. He had no clue that it could have been a cryptic warning about the tragedy that would befall him.

Shaukat told the police that family get-togethers were common and that he had received no formal invitation this time. Shaukat lost his wife and two sons in the massacre.

Shaukat also told the police that he was aware of the huge loans Warekar had taken and that he was unable to pay them.

Warekar had lost almost Rs 2 crore in share-trading in the past few months, said police sources. Husnain killed his whole family by slitting their throats and then hanged himself in Kasarvadavali, Thane, on Sunday.

The police is checking details of the bank accounts of Husnain and all other family members for further investigation and to find out the motive behind the mass murders.
