Chennai: Two women robbed a home-alone woman of nearly 100 sovereigns and Rs 50,000 cash while prospecting the house on the pretext of being potential tenants, on Monday. The incident came to light after the neighbours rescued the victim who was locked inside her house by the pair of robbers.

Sources said Chandrika (42), resident of Srinivasan Street, Perambur was busy preparing dinner for her children when the duo rang the doorbell. They told her they were looking to rent the portion which she had advertised on the 'To let' board on her gate.

Chandrika welcomed the duo in and took one of them to the first floor to show her around while the other woman stayed back on the ground floor on the pretext that she would wait for her husband, who was close by, to join them.

An unsuspecting Chandrika showed the portion for rent while the woman who stayed behind scouted the house and managed to pack the valuables and cash from the unlocked almirah.

When Chandrika came down, she found the other woman moving around her ground floor residence. Sensing foul play, Chandrika tried to raise an alarm. Her prospective tenants pinned her down and knocked her out, besides leaving her locked in her own home.

On waking up, Chandrika raised an alarm and was subsequently rescued.
While she is a homemaker, her husband Rajan works in a private firm in Irungattukottai. He was at work when the incident took place while his mother who lives with them had gone out to fetch her grandchildren from a private school in Perambur.

The cops suspect that the duo might have gathered required recce to strike and are poring over all the available footage from the neighbourhood to establish their identity. A case had been registered by Sembium Police based on a complaint from Rajan.
