Devotee couple sedated, robbed of Rs 3 lakh cash, gold

TIRUPATI: A devotee couple was robbed of cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh at Chengalamma temple in Sullurpeta of Nellore district after some unknown miscreants offered them soft drinks spiked with a sedative late on Thursday night.
According to reports, as part of a customary practice, devotees visit the Chengalamma temple during the new moon day, stay there overnight before offering worship to the Goddess.
Following the practice, one Yesu of Obulapuram village in Tamil Nadu visited the temple along with his wife Minnala on Thursday. The couple were taking rest inside the temple complex when two unknown miscreants, including a woman, who posed themselves as devotees, befriended them.
After some time, they offered the couple soft drinks spiked with sedatives. When the couple fell unconscious the criminals decamped with gold ornaments, cash, mobile and other valuables.
The issue came to light on Friday morning when the temple management observed the condition of the couple, who were lying on the floor unconscious. After being alerted by the temple staff, police rushed to the spot and collected details. They shifted the couple to Sullurpeta government hospital for treatment. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
