Thrissur: The additional district sessions court here on Tuesday sentenced Thop-puparambil Sreekumar, accused in the murder of Vayalppadi Abhilash in 2011, to life imprisonment. Additional district judge Nizar Ahamed, who pronounced the judgment, also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him.

The incident occurred on the AKG Nagar road at Punkunam on the day of Assembly polls on April 13, 2011. Sreekumar, who was then 24, had given the memory card of his mobile phone to Vayalpp-adi Abhilash,19, who was a student of PG Centre here.

However, Abhilash lost the memory card and Sre-ekumar kept on demanding the card back. On the fateful day, Sreekumar stopped Abhilash who was riding a bicycle through the Punkunam AKG Nagar road at 9.30 p.m. Following a quarrel, the accused hacked the victim on his chest repeatedly. There were six eye witnesses in the case.

Mr P. Sunil, prosecution lawyer, said that the convict committed the murder deliberately. “I asked the convict whether there were any confidential files on the memory card and what the provocation was to commit  the crime. But he did not gave a proper reply,” he said.
