KOZHIKODE: Highway robbers looted a Bangalore-bound KSRTC bus by threatening the passengers at knifepoint at Channapatna near Bangalore in Karnataka in the wee hours of Thursday. The police took into custody 16 persons and arrested one, KSRTC zonal manager N. Premarajan said. The incident took place around 2.45 am when the driver stopped the bus for a small break.
Four men with covered faces threatened passengers, putting sickle on the neck and took away money and gold ornaments. Driver K.M. Jamaluddin said the four who came on two bikes asked passengers whether the bus was bound to Bangalore. When they said ‘yes’, the gangsters barged in wielding sickles and put them around their neck. Gold ornaments (2.5 sovereigns) and about Rs 2,000 in cash from two male passengers were robbed off.
The gangsters escaped when the driver returned and tried to close the automatic door threatening to call the police. Though the goons tried to snatch away two gold chains of women, one of them fell on the floor while another woman resisted. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the state police chief is in touch with his Karnataka counterpart and had sought protection for KSRTC buses.
