Chennai: Gold worth Rs 12.5 lakh seized

On searching their luggage a total of 397 grams of gold valued at Rs 12.5 lakhs was seized from them.

Chennai: The customs sleuths at Anna International airport detected gold smuggling on Friday morning.

Shahul Hameed (31) of Chennai arrived from Sharjah via Trivandrum by Air India flight on Friday morning was intercepted on suspicion, as he appeared to be nervous.

On questioning, he revealed that he had brought gold bangles and chains with him and had handed over four bangles and three chains weighing 347 grams to a woman passenger.

He also handed over another chain weighing 50 grams to another male passenger. Both the domestic passengers had boarded a flight at Trivandrum.

On searching their luggage a total of 397 grams of gold valued at Rs 12.5 lakhs was seized from them. Further probe is on.
