Coimbatore: Police arrested a fake woman doctor in connection with the death of a pregnant woman whom she had treated a few days ago at Negamam - Mettuvavi, near Pollachi.

According to police, Muthulaxmi, who is a fake doctor, had along with her 26-year-old son, who is pursuing an Ayurveda course, administrated medicine for a 37-year-old woman using an injection for aborting her foetus. The woman died after the injection two days ago.

Selvaraj, a daily wage labourer, residing with his four sons and a daughter and wife Vanitha Mani, recently came to know that she was five months pregnant and had approached the fake doctor Muthulaxmi at her Vadachithoor hospital for aborting her foetus.

The woman and her son Karthick had administrated Vanitha Mani with an injection which led to Vanitha Mani’s condition deteriorating and she died on the way to Pollachi government hospital.

Negamam police have registered a complaint, but before they could start the investigation, Muthulaxmi and her son went absconding. Police have launched a search for the duo.

Health department Deputy Director, Banumathi, along with Family welfare department joint director Krishna, District Sidha medical officer Dhanam including a team launched a raid and sealed Muthulaxmi’s hospital, where they found a lot of syringes and needles in the backyard.

Muthulaxmi has been running an Ayurveda clinic for more than 15 years. During a raid by the health department officials in 2018, Muthulaxmi had locked her clinic and went missing, but had opened it again a few months ago. The lethargy of health officials in not cracking down on the clinic has led to the killing of an innocent woman, alleged a police official.

Meanwhile, a special police team arrested Muthulaxmi from Nagapattinam on Tuesday night, while she was hiding at a friend's house. She was brought to Negamam and is being interrogated while another special team has launched a hunt for her son who is still on the run.
