Karnataka SIT to chargesheet Justice Rao this week

Governor Vajubhai Vala gave his sanction to prosecute Justice Rao for allegedly abetting multi-crore corruption racket in the Lokayukta.

Bengaluru: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the alleged multi-crore corruption scandal in the Lokayukta, is likely to chargesheet former Lokayukta Justice Bhaskar Rao this week.

Additional Director General of Police, Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), Kamal Pant, who is heading the SIT, told Deccan Chronicle that they have received the file from Governor Vajubhai Vala, giving his sanction to prosecute Justice Rao for allegedly abetting the multi-crore corruption racket in the Lokayukta, under Section 197 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in the FIR 56/2015.

The SIT will chargesheet the former Lokayukta under Sections 8, 9 and 10 of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act and Sections 119 (concealment by design by a public servant), 120 (criminal conspiracy) r/w 36, 202 (intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform) and 217 (a public servant disobeying direction of law with intent to save person from punishment or property from forfeiture) among others of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The FIR was registered by the Lokayukta police in July last year in the multi-crore extortion and corruption racket against former joint commissioner and public relations officer, Lokayukta, Syed Riyazathullah, Ashok Kumar, Srinivasa Gowda, Shankare Gowda, V. Bhaskar alias 420 Bhaskar and Justice Rao’s son Y. Ashwin. Later, the case was transferred to the SIT. Justice Rao resigned in December 2015 following an impeachment motion against him in the state Legislature in November.
