Bengaluru: In IT city, our kids unsafe?

The NCRB data also reveals that the city has registered a significant rise in crimes against children over the past 2-3 years.

BENGALURU: If you thought that IT City was safe for children, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has some startling statistics for you. Among 19 metropolitan cities Bengaluru stood third, next only to Delhi and Mumbai, in the list of highest number of crimes against children.

The NCRB data also reveals that the city has registered a significant rise in crimes against children over the past 2-3 years. In the year 2016 the city recorded 1,333 cases of crimes against children, while in 2015 it was 1,086 and in 2014 (1,036).

Among the crimes committed against children, kidnapping topped the list with 888 cases recorded in 2016. However, the city is way behind Mumbai (1,940) and Delhi (5,770).

As for murder of children, Bengaluru recorded 11 cases in 2016, slightly behind Mumbai (16), while Delhi leads 37 cases.
POCSO cases

As for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act cases, Bengaluru figured fourth with 320 cases, behind Pune (358). Mumbai reported 989 cases, while Delhi topped with 1,374 cases. However, the city figured third in rape cases involving minors. There were 239 cases in 2016, while Mumbai had 455 cases and Delhi 739 cases.

The city figured fourth in sexual assault cases on childrenwith with 50 cases in 2016. It was behind Pune (161), Mumbai (474) and Delhi (613).
