Thane mass murder: 'Warekar had sexual problems, may have been schizophrenic'

Thane: Husnain Warekar from Thane, who killed himself after butchering 14 of his family members on Sunday, may have been suffering from schizophrenia, which led to the murders, says police.

Police has been trying to locate the pharma store from where the drugs were purchased and track the doctor who prescribed the drugs. Police has also been mapping his personality via inputs from his friends, relatives and neighbours. They have also got in touch with the caretaker of the dargah he frequented.

Police also believe that he may have served his family members drinks that were spiked. “How else can anyone kill so many people without the victims offering any resistance?” the officer said.
The police have sent five newly bought handkerchiefs found in the house for forensic analysis to see if he had used chloroform on his victims.

The 35-year-old Husnain killed 14 members of his family — including his parents, wife, two daughters, three sisters and their children — at his Thane house before committing suicide in the early hours of Sunday. He slit their throats with a butcher’s knife. When the police reached the crime spot, they found 14 bodies with their throats slit on the ground and first floor of the house. Husnain’s body was found hanging, with a knife still in his hand.
