Bengaluru: Man kills wife, pet dog, jumps to death

According to neighbours, Atul and Mamatha had a quarrel on Tuesday morning before the incident.

Bengaluru: In a macabre incident, a 60-year-old man allegedly killed his wife with a dumbbell, threw his pet dog from the terrace of their apartment and later committed suicide by jumping off the terrace in Sadashivanagar police station limits on Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified Atul Upadhaya and his wife Mamatha Upadhyaya (50). Atul was running a travel agency in Ulsoor, the police said.

The police have recovered a suicide note which stated that one of them (it was not specified) had recently found to be suffering from advanced stage of cancer and did not want to go through depression or any more suffering.

The couple was residing on the fourth floor of an apartment near Gayathri Vihar with the son of Atul's brother, who was pursuing LLB at a city college.

According to neighbours, Atul and Mamatha had a quarrel on Tuesday morning before the incident. The Sadashiva Nagar police said the incident took place at around 10.30 am.

"After Atul's nephew left for college around 9:30 am, the couple got into a quarrel for about 45 minutes. The quarrel then ended with the killing of Mamatha. Atul had hit her on the head with a dumbbell. Later he took their Labrador dog to the terrace on the sixth floor and threw it to the ground and later committed suicide by jumping from there.

The police rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to hospital for postmortem. Though the police have found the death note in which the Atul had mentioned of cancer, they are investigating to as to who was suffering from it.

It is learnt that Atul was suffering from depression for the past few months. Sadashivanagar police have registered a case and begun the investigation.
