Hyderabad: Five held for selling a baby
A childless couple from Visakhapatnam, an IT professional and his wife, had bought the girl child for Rs 50,000.
Hyderabad: Five people including an IT professional were arrested on Tuesday for selling a four-day-old baby at Yacharam. A childless couple from Visakhapatnam, an IT professional and his wife, had bought the girl child for Rs 50,000.
Sources said while the parents of the infant, who are labourers from Nalgonda, got only Rs 10,000, the middlemen took rest of the money as commission.
Police tracked them following a tip off and arrested the suspects. Though neither party is from Hyderabad, the alleged transaction took place at Mall village in Yacharam on Tuesday.
G. Srinath (43), an IT professional working in Bengaluru and his wife G. Ajitha Kumar (40), a schoolteacher, had been childless after a decade of marriage. They had tried to adopt but were not successful, said police officials.
“Two women acted as middlepersons between the childless couple and the infant’s parents. Sunitha, who runs a medical shop in LB Nagar and another woman named Shakri, a relative of the infant’s parents, fixed the deal,” said Mr J. Madan Mohan Reddy.
The infant’s mother, N. Sirisha from Devarkonda, had delivered a third girl child four days ago. She and her husband N. Ravi Kiran were ready to give the baby to some other couple because they were poor, added police sources.
Shakri informed Sunitha, who then contacted the couple in Vishakhapatnam. They came to Yacharam to take the baby after paying the money. However, cops apprehended them.
