Her husband Ravi Kumar after informing about the death to Lakshmi's parents escaped from the village.
Guntur: A married woman committed suicide due to alleged harassment by her in-laws.
Angered over the death, her relatives attacked the in-laws and staged a protest at Turimella in Rompicharla mandal, Guntur district, on Wednesday.
According to Rompicharla SI N. Prakash Rao, 27-year-old Dontu Lakshmi committed suicide by hanging herself on the ceiling fan in her house at Turimella.
Her husband Ravi Kumar after informing about the death to Lakshmi’s parents escaped from the village.
The angry parents, along with their relatives, rushed to in-laws’ house and attacked her father-in-law D.V. Chalam and mother-in-law Kotamma.
Lakshmi’s father, Venkat Rao, said Lakshmi was married to Ravi Kumar seven years ago and that the couple had two daughters.
He alleged that Ravi and his parents did not like daughters and harassed Lakshmi for not giving birth to a boy.
Lakshmi became a pregnant for the third time too but her husband and in-laws feared it would be a girl again and got it aborted.
After abortion, Lakshmi went to her parents’ house in Vinukonda. Four days ago, Ravi Kumar told his father-in-law to send Lakshmi back to his house and Venkat Rao dropped her there.
However, once again he and his parents reportedly harassed Lakshmi for giving birth to daughters and unable to withstand the torture, she committed suicide. Venkat Rao lodged a complaint with the cops.
