Krishnagiri: A timely intervention by the district police has enabled two thieves to be spared off a ‘mob trial and mob violence’ by angry villagers who caught them when the two accused tried to lay their hands in the ‘hundi’ of a local temple.
In the early hours of Thursday, the Shoolagiri police of Krishnagiri were tipped off about the local people doing a 'mob trial' for two robbers caught by them.
The police, following information, went to the spot and stopped the men from getting beaten up black and blue by the villagers, who tied them to a lamp post and were giving them a thrashing.
They were caught when the local people went in search of thieves who attempted to rob the ‘hundi (offerings box)’ kept here in the temple on Berigai-Shoolagiri road.
The men in police custody admitted of their robbery bid and gave their names as 36-year-old Moorthi of Krishnapalli village and 42-year-old Sivakumar of Marithandapalli village.
