As per the recently released statistics by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Bengaluru has registered the highest number of cases under the IT Act, while Jaipur comes a distant second with 459 cases. In total, the 53 cities registered 4,167 cases under the IT Act in 2015, and nearly 25 percent were registered in Bengaluru. Among states Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 2,208 cases and Maharashtra with 2,195 cases.

Among the motives, financial gain tops the list, while outraging the modesty of women, sexual exploitation, blackmailing are the other reasons.

An official in Cyber Crime police station said that currently highest number of cases were registered in connection with vishing calls. “Most of the complainants are falling prey to vishing calls. A gang that has a large number of fraudsters is operating from Jamtara district in Jharkhand. They call people and tell they are representatives from various banks and people are falling prey. Solving such cases is a headache as they operate on using all bogus documents. They give false documents to get phone connection and to open bank accounts,” the official said.

He also opined that high number of cyber crime cases in the state was because the police were registering them. “In many other states, there are more number of such cases. But the police there refuse to register the cases,” he added.
