Bengaluru: Lorry runs over pedestrians, kills four
Passersby caught hold of the driver and thrashed him before handing him over to the police.
Mysuru: Four pedestrians died and seven others sustained severe injuries after a lorry carrying tender coconuts went out of control and crashed into them on Guthal Road at the Sugar Factory Circle, in Mandya town on Tuesday night.
The lorry deriver, Shakti, a resident of Shankar Math in Mandya, was arrested.
The police said that Rafiq (46), Gowramma (55) and Shashank (25) died on the spot, while Rahul (25) died at the Mandya Medical College and Research Institute. All were from Mandya town. Two of the injured, who suffered severe head injuries, have been shifted to Nimhans in Bengaluru, while others are being treated at MIMS. The condition of four is critical, they said.
The lorry was carrying tender coconuts from K.M. Doddi to Gulbarga. After running over the pedestrians, the lorry hit the road divider and got stuck, otherwise the situation would have been worse, the police said. The reason behind the accident is yet to be ascertained.
