Kochi: The Special Investigation team probing the rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Perumbavur on Friday conducted a search at Iringolkkavu near the victim’s residence and recovered a plastic cover containing handycam and clothes abandoned there. However, officials are yet to confirm whether they are linked with the murder, now over a month old.

The search was conducted at the place two kms away from the victim’s house as eyewitnesses had given a statement that they had seen a person under suspicious circumstances there on the day of the murder on April 28. On Thursday, the cops released a new sketch of the suspect based on the description of the eyewitness.

“We suspect that the accused escaped through the backdoor after committing the crime and crossed the canal flowing near her house and went to the Iringolkkavu, a place frequented by visitors,” said sources. Earlier, the cops took a migrant labourer into custody from Kannur as he was having resemblance with the suspect’s sketch. However, he was later released.

Meanwhile, the investigation team will again question the victim’s mother since she had earlier given contradicting statements. The investigation team has been expanded with the strength now reaching to 40 personnel headed by ADGP B Sandhya.
