Coimbatore: A 65-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself after assaulting his wife by thrashing her head with a gas cylinder during the early hours of Monday, in the suburbs of the city.

Police said, Marimuthu, a resident of Vedappatti - Nanjappa Gounder street, was working as a security guard at a private firm. After parting from his first wife 20 years ago, Marimuthu had married Subbathaal (60).

Marimuthu was taking care of his younger brother, Krishnan (60), who is mentally-challenged. But, Subbathaal had allegedly remained negligent in taking care of her brother-in-law. Marimuthu had picked a quarrel with his wife for not taking care of his brother on Sunday night.

After a heated verbal quarrel, Marimuthu around 2 am on Monday, took the gas cylinder and thrashed his wife’s head while she was sleeping. Subbathaal died on the spot. Seeing his wife dead, Marimuthu panicked and hanged himself to death. Vadavalli police are investigating.
