Chennai: Municipality surveyor held for demanding bribe
Ashok Raj initially refused to give the bribe citing lack of money. Shankar allegedly insisted the bribe, the sources said.
Chennai: Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption (DVAC) arrested a land surveyor of Kancheepuram municipality on charges of accepting bribe, on Friday.
The arrested official was identified as S. Shankar (50), a resident of Kancheepuram and a land surveyor in Kancheepuram municipality.
According to DVAC sources, Shankar had allegedly demanded Rs. 10,000 bribe from Ashok Raj (24) of Nakalathumedu near Kancheepuram to measure his family's ancestral land.
“Ashok Raj initially refused to give the bribe citing lack of money. Shankar allegedly insisted the bribe,” the sources said.
As Ashok Raj did not want to give bribe, he approached DVAC and lodged a complaint against Shankar. Following the complaint, the DVAC sleuths laid a trap and directed Ashok to 'give' Rs 2,000 to Shankar.
“On the advice of officials, Ashok handed over the chemically treated currencies worth Rs 2,000, while sleuths waited for Shankar to accept the money,” the sources said.
When Shankar reportedly accepted the bribe, the sleuths caught him red-handed. The DVAC officials arrested Shankar and produced before the magistrate. He was remanded in judicial custody.
