COIMBATORE: A 28-year-old engineer was arrested for stabbing a girl due to a one-sided love affair in Coimbatore on Wednesday evening. Police said on Thursday that the accused Vemburaj of Ramanathapuram district and working as an engineer in a private firm in Chennai and 21-year-old Kanagalakshmi, an MCA student of Bharathiyar University here, had initially become friends on Facebook and the boy later developed a crush on her.

Though the girl did not reciprocate his love feelings, she continued to chat with him over phone, police said. But when Vemburaj insisted that he marry her, Kanagalakshmi stopped talking and changed her mobile phone number. An angry Vemburaj came down to Coimbatore on Wednesday and waited in front of her college gate, police said. As she came out around 5-30 pm, he blocked her way, picked up a quarrel with her and impulsively took a piece of broken glass from the roadside and stabbed her.

A hapless Kanagalakshmi fell down on the road bleeding, even Vemburaj sped away. Teachers and students took the girl to a nearby private hospital for first aid. She was later sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment, and is being treated in ICU. Vadavalli police, based on a tip-off, arrested Vemburaj near the Ukkadam bus stand on Wednesday night. He was booked under IPC sections 307, 354, for attempt to murder and woman harassment produced in the court on Thursday and sent to jail in Coimbatore.
