Police said in September locals at Venkiryala found a newborn girl abandoned in the field. The baby was handed over to Shishu Vihar. Police traced the woman who it was found had delivered the child a week earlier. When she refused that it was her child, the baby and mother were sent for a DNA test. The test returned positive.
After the police questioned her, she admitted that Kolumula Shanker, 32, had lured her by promising marriage and sexually assaulted her in his field. When she became pregnant and delivered a female baby, he refused to marry her. Shankar was arrested and sent to remand.
