543 students die by suicide, Telangana accounts to 6% of overall suicides in India

Hyderabad: The National Crime Records Bureau put out alarming statistics with regard to suicides in the state, the data clearly calling for more measures to be taken to spot those in distress and take measures to help them.

The report said that 543 students died by suicide due to various reasons in the state in 2022, at the rate of nearly three young persons every three days.

The Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India-2022 report said 9,980 people had died by suicide in Telangana, which amounted to six per cent of all suicides in the country. They included 7,769 men and 2,211 women.

It said nine due to unemployment and six died due to poverty. Sixtysix people died due to failure in examinations.

Among those who died by suicide were 1,772 self-employed persons and 757 housewives, apart from 714 professionals and salaried persons in the private sector and 78 in the public sector. 113 unemployed and 4,513 daily wage labourers.

Giving a break-up of the stated reasons for suicide, the report said that 5,390 people had died due to family problems, followed by 1163 people due to debts. 1,658 persons died due to illness — including 831 due to mental illness —and 97 people died by suicide due to drug abuse or alcoholic addiction.

Further 221 people died due to love affairs, 27 people due to divorce and eight people had taken their lives due to infertility and impotency.
