Hyderabad: Police prevented three child marriages last month in Choutuppal and rescued three girls from ending up in child marriages. Police said that though the evil was prevalent in rural areas, there is a change after awareness camps were organised to educate people against the evil.

Rachakonda police commissioner M.M. Bhagwat said that priests, wedding card printers and guests at the marriage will also be held responsible. On March 3, SHE teams were alerted by a villager from Aroor about a child marriage, in which a 17-year-old girl was forced to marry a 23-year-old man. The girl was rescued. A week later, police received a call from Ibrahimpat-nam and on reaching the village, police found that an SSC student was forced into marriage. She was rescued and her parents were also counselled. However, when the parents were not willing to stop the marriage, police shifted her to a rescue home.
