Kochi: The Kochi City Police has started a probe with the help of cyber cell after a fake voice-clip in the  name of an Assistant Commissioner of Police and aimed at generating fear in the minds of the public, was found to be  circulating in WhatsApp groups. “A probe is on to trace the origin of the message that cites recent death of a girl in the city and warns about the city being unsafe.

The same is false and against facts. Strict action will be initiated against the scare mongers who even dared to create a fake message in the name of Ernakulam ACP K. Lalji,” said a senior officer. The Ernakulam Central Police lodged a suo-motu case under the Information Technology Act and a  special squad led by Circle Inspector A. Ananthalal was formed to probe  the case.

“If anyone gets  information on the fake voice-clip and caption being shared in social media, their statement  will be recorded. Already we’re monitoring a few  suspects. Also, action  will be taken against anyone found sharing the same. If the same is  found shared in WhatsApp group, the group admin will be made an accused in the case,” the officer warned.
