ANANTAPUR: Kurnool MP S. Sanjeev Kumar fell into the trap of cybercriminals and lost ₹ 97,699 from his savings bank account with a HDFC Bank branch after disclosing his account details and OTP numbers.

According to information available, the MP received an SMS to his registered mobile phone in the name of HDFC Bank customer care centre. Sanjeev Kumar was informed that his bank account had been blocked because his PAN number has not been linked with his bank account. Believing the SMS, the MP shared details of his bank account and other details. Following this, he immediately received OTP numbers.

Soon, he received a phone call from a person claiming to be from HDFC Bank customer care. The person sought details about OTP and other bank details. Believing that it was a genuine call from the bank’s customer care, Sanjeev Kumar disclosed OTP numbers to the caller.

Within minutes, the MP received messages of ₹ 48,700 and ₹ 48,999 being withdrawn from his savings account. He immediately approached the bank and found that it had been a fake call.

Sanjeev Kumar has lodged a complaint with Kunrool Two Town police. Circle inspector Srinivasulu registered a case and alerted cyber crime police station.

Sources said those who cheated the MP had conducted their operation from New Delhi.

Police have warned people about being aware of fraud calls seeking linkage of PAN card numbers and other information.
