Hyderabad: Sale of baby girl averted, child-selling gang busted
The couple handed over the baby to Lakshmi and took Rs 50,000 in return, the ACP said.
Hyderabad: The alertness shown by street vendors helped the Panjagutta police nab a gang and avert the sale of a one-month-old baby girl. The gang was selling the baby for Rs 50,000 to another couple.
Locals heard a broker talking to his associate about hiding the baby girl and called the cops, whose quick action led to the arrest of the gang.
The girl was the third daughter to her parents, Bhagat Singh and Sujata, who were trying to sell her as their financial condition was unstable, said ACP, Panjagutta, Vijay Kumar.
“Sujata informed her relative Lakshmi about the baby. Lakshmi called Bharat, a broker who sets up the sale of babies and acts as a mediator. The couple handed over the baby to Lakshmi and took Rs 50,000 in return,” the ACP said.
“Bharat, his wife and Lakshmi came to Ameerpet main road and made a call to a domestic help working in Miyapur and asked her to keep the baby with her till a prospective buyer shows up,” the official said.
That is when locals who heard him talking on the phone called the police on suspicion. The police rushed to the scene and nabbed Bharat, who was holding the baby. Her parents also were called to the police station. “The baby has been sent to a Home and will be handed over to her parents” said Panjagutta inspector S. Ravindar.
The ACP said the police would be seeking legal opinion to proceed further with the case.
