Rapes in Karnataka: In 97 per cent cases, offenders knew survivors

In 219 cases, the known accused had promised to marry the victims.

Bengaluru: In a disturbing trend, the recently released National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data has revealed that in 97.1 percent rape cases reported in Karnataka, the offenders knew the survivors.

The trend is similar across the country as the percentage of survivors knowing the offenders  in rape cases is 95.5. With a total of 589 rape cases, Karnataka is in the 16th position out of the 29 states. Out of 589 cases registered across the state, Bengaluru alone has registered 112 cases. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan top the chart with MP registering 4,391 rape cases while Maharashtra and Rajasthan have registered 4,144 and 3,644 cases respectively.

Out of 589 cases registered in Karnataka, in 572 cases offenders were known to the victims. In these cases, 13 accused were either grand father or father or brother or son, while 24 were close family members. While relatives were involved in 30 cases, employer or co workers committed the offence in 32 cases.

In 219 cases the known accused had promised to marry the victims. While neighbours were the accused in 155 cases, other known persons committed the offence in 93 cases. Only in 17 cases, the offenders were not identified by the victims.

The trend remains the same even in POCSO cases. Of the 1,073 such cases reported in Karnataka, in 1,045 cases (97.4 percent) the victims knew the offenders. Neighbours were involved in 390 cases, while other known persons were involved in 253 cases. Only in 28 cases, the victims could not identify the offenders.
