Software engineer commits suicide in Eluru, row over police role
Thejo Murthy, who was in love with a girl, Naga Priyanka, for the past eight years, married her in May, has died by suicide on Monday
Kakinada: Software engineer Chakka Thejo Murthy (26) of Denduluru village in Eluru district has died by suicide near the rail track in the early hours of Monday.
According to Eluru One Town police, Thejo Murthy was in love with a girl, Naga Priyanka, for the past eight years. They tied the nuptial knots at the Arya Samaj in Hyderabad in May last, but Priyanka’s relatives opposed the marriage.
Meanwhile, differences cropped up between the couple. Thejo came to Denduluru along with his wife in August. Later, Priyanka lodged a complaint with the police against Thejo under Section 498 A.
Police circle inspector N. Rajasekhar said he tried to do counselling to both, Naga Priyanka was not ready to have a reconciliation with her husband.
Thejo Murthy wrote a four-page suicide note in which he said Priyanka suspected he was having an affair with another girl. “I have no such extra-marital affair but my wife’s family too took her side.”
Eluru Railway police registered a case of suicide. Meanwhile, the issue raised a controversy in the social media. It was alleged that Thejo Murthy and his relatives wanted the police to do counselling but the police advised him to settle the matter by “paying” some money. “Due to this pressure, he took this extreme step.”
Eluru DSP A. Srinivasa Rao rejected the allegation. “The campaign on social media that Thejo Murthy has died by suicide due to harassment by the CI is not correct,” he claimed.
He said that as per law, the CI had made counselling to both wife and husband in the presence of their elders. “The deceased had not stated anything about the harassment of the CI. However, a department inquiry is being done on this allegation,” he said.
