BE student kidnapped and killed near Kumbakonam

The police secured four persons and are interrogating them.

Thanjavur: In a tragic development, an engineering college student was kidnapped and killed after the culprits made a vain attempt to get a ransom of Rs 5 lakh for releasing the youth at Kumbakonam near here on Saturday. Mumthasar (20), son of Sahul Hameed of Avaniyapuram near Aduthurai near Kumbakonam, was studying at A.V.C. Engineering College, Mayiladuthurai. He was staying with his mother Mumtaz Begum and his father is abroad. 

Mumthasar left his house at 6.30 pm on Friday saying that he is going to his sister’s house at Thirumangalakudi on his bike. Later, he called his mother and said he was going to his friend's house at Thiruvidaimaruthur. 

But at 8.30 pm, Mumtaz Begum received a call from some unknown person who said that they have kidnapped her son and will release him only if Rs 5 lakh is paid to them, adding, they were taking him to Coimbatore.

Mumtaz Begum and her brother Nazeer Muhamed complained to Thiruvidaimaurthur police who started investigations. They traced the phone call to Thirubuvanam area and when they tried the mobile number, it was switched off. 

Meanwhile, on Saturday morning body of Mumthasar was found near with throat slit on the banks of Veeracholan river at Thirubuvanam on Saturday morning.  His motorbike was missing. The police secured four persons and are interrogating them.
