Chennai: Doctor, 5 more held for murder attempt
Accused, dressed in burqa, stabs lady doctor.
Chennai: Police on Thursday arrested a 43-year-old doctor and five others on charges of attempting to murder a lady doctor. A man who covered himself in a burqa had attacked Dr S. Ramya with a knife outside her apartment on Patel road, Perambur, on Wednesday night around 10 pm. Hearing her cries, her family rushed to her rescue and moved her to a hospital.
Sembium police who began investigations with the victim found that the lady doctor did not have any enmity per se barring threat calls from her former employer Dr V.M. Thomas (43), chairman of Chennai Fertility Centre.
Police investigations revealed that Ramya was employed at Dr Thomas’ hospital on Nelson Manickam Road for about past three years. “Six months ago, Ramya resigned from the hospital and joined as a partner in another fertility clinic at Jai Nagar in Arumbakkam,” an investigating officer said.
This has irked Thomas, who held Ramya responsible for poaching patients from his centre to the hospital she is working in. He had made several calls to her, first requesting, then demanding her to join back in his centre, to which she refused. “Ever since Thomas has been threatening Ramya over the phone and on Wednesday he hired goons with the help of his manager, V. Yonah (42) and attacked Ramya with the intention to murder her,” a police officer said.
Sembium police arrested six persons — Dr Thomas, his manager, V. Yonah, D. Mugilan (36) of Royapuram, K. Sathyakala (33), M. Bhavani (23) and K. Palanisamy (22) of Tsunami quarters, Ennore.
The arrested persons were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
