KOCHI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has asked the Ernakulam district police chief to submit an inquiry report within three weeks on the alleged brutal assault on a Youth Congress activist by Mulanthuruthy sub-inspector M.V Arun Dev in the police station. P.S. Jobish had approached the SHRC and the Police Complaint Authority seeking action against the alleged “inhumane approach and terrorising” by the police officer when he reached the police station to discuss about a case.

“I and T.V Gopidas, a former member of Udayamperoor panchayat, reached the police station after the police and two rival groups of youngsters clashed at the Mulanthuruthy Pallithazham junction,” Mr Jobish said. “When we reached the station, one of the youngsters taken into custody was seen brutally beaten up by the police official. When I enquired about the incident, the SI beat the youngster again. The SI and another police official used abusive language and pushed me by my shirt collar to another room. He assaulted me when I questioned the torture.”

Mr Jobish said he had complained to Ernakulam Range inspector general P. Vijayan. “I took up the issue with higher police officials but there has been no action. I wonder why a police officer who blatantly violates human rights is allowed to continue in service.” The Rights Commission acting chairman P. Mohanadas in the order issued on November 30 has observed that it is a clear violation of human rights and there are clear norms in on how police should behave in stations.
