Hyderabad: The Gopalapuram police have found a woman’s bag that went missing with Rs 30 lakh, and arrested a GHMC worker on Monday.

The accused, Kalvakol Ramulu, 48, was apprehended by the crime staff of Gopalapuram police at RTC crossroads, police said, adding that he hid the money at home and had kept aside some of it for his wife’s medication and his son’s bike.

“Bhagavathula Mohini, a resident of New Nallakunta, complained on August 1, stating that her bag containing Rs 30 lakh went missing from a running autorickshaw,” said DCP North Zone, B. Sumathi.

“Upon receiving the complaint, the Gopalapuram crime team zeroed in on the autorickshaw and the driver was summoned to the police station,” said the official.

“The autorickshaw driver was ruled out as the accused, as the bag had fallen off the auto. The crime team looked at CCTV footages and searched 42 cameras. Footage of the auto was found in 22 cameras. They then saw the footage of the bag falling off the auto near Bawarchi hotel in RTC crossroads and observed a GHMC worker picking it up,” the official added.

GHMC supervisor Srinivas was called in and the worker was identified as Ramulu, a contract employee. Efforts were made to trace and apprehend Ramulu and he was arrested on Monday.

“During interrogation, he confessed to picking up the bag and Rs 5 lakh was recovered from the nearby dumping yard. The team then proceeded to Gangaram and recovered Rs 23,40,300 from his house. He also confessed that he had given Rs 59,700 to his son K. Srisailam for buying a two-wheeler and Rs 1 lakh for his wife’s medical expenses,” concluded the official.
